Steven Lawson: The kind of preaching that God blesses

There is a kind of preaching that God blesses, specifically the proclamation that exalts the crucified Christ by the power of the Spirit. Conversely, there is a kind of preaching that God does not bless, a mere echoing of man’s empty wisdom that is devoid of Christ. ~ Lawson, Steven J.  from The Kind of Preaching God Blesses

I think I would add to that definition in order to bring clarity. The kind of preaching that has little value for the people of God is empty preaching. Preaching that is devoid of the Word of God and full of the pastors own words. It is one thing to use your words to explain what the text is saying and then to apply it to today. It is an altogether different thing to spend ones limited preaching time by casually referencing a verse and then filling the rest of your sermon with your own words. Pastor, with all do respect, we don’t really care what you think. We care what God thinks and we want to know what He says. Spend your time teaching us THAT and we will grow.
